Character Biography

History: Simon spent his childhood at home with his parents and his brilliant sister, River. He studied hard but always made time for his meimei. He finished medacad without any trouble and finished his internship in eight months, at which point he realized that his sister was being used as a government experiment. After months of searching and seeking, Simon found the info he needed to get her out. With the help of a few people he managed to save River and escape to Persephone. From there they traveled with the crew of Serenity, a Firefly class transport ship, for many long months. They got into heaps of trouble, had many close calls with the totalitarian government that was after them and nearly lost their lives, but somehow they managed to live on. For a while, Simon was romantically involved with the ship's mechanic, Kaylee, but in the end his sister took precedence.

How Others Perceive Your Character: Often too proper, too neat, too straight-laced. Most people think he doesn't know how to have fun, but they don't understand the kinds of things he thinks he has to do (or not do) for his sister's sake.
Beliefs, Convictions, Morals: He lives by the phrase "Do No Harm" from the Hippocratic Oath. The only reason he would ever use to violate that is his sister. Simon believes that being proper and well-mannered is the only true way to show respect and to keep some semblance of himself in the chaos of the world.
Reason(s) for Escaping to Canada: It's a place where the Alliance would never look for him; Earth-That-Was isn't an Allied planet. He can keep River safe there and still practice medicine.

Sample Journal Entry

I'm starting a new life in Alternaville. I never thought I'd get to see Earth-that-Was, let alone be a part of it, but here I am. It's been so long, almost longer than I care to admit, since I've been this relaxed. Here is possibly the one place where we can get peace, where there are no Alliance patrols, where we can't be found. I can go back to being a surgeon. God, it's been so long since I've worked in a hospital that I'll be lucky if I remember how the system works.

There are times when I miss Serenity, the crew, the family dynamic. I especially miss Kaylee. There's nothing familiar here. Part of me wishes I had stayed on Serenity. Life wasn't that dangerous aboard the ship. On the run we were safe from the Alliance, just like we're safe here. On Serenity I was making a difference. It was small, and it wasn't always professional, but it was something. I miss that, the sense of usefulness and purpose. It isn't something I can get in a clinic, or a hospital, with hundreds or thousands of other doctors and nurses that do the same things I do day in and day out.

Maybe one day I'll get the chance to feel those things again. Maybe one day I'll see the crew again, I'll have the chance to thank Mal for everything, to leave Kaylee with a better word than our last, to say a final few words to everyone that I didn't have the chance to say. I just have to wait for that day to come.

Sample RPG

Simon walked around the house, looking at everything for the thousandth time. It just still didn't feel familiar. Thankfully the Alliance had unfrozen his accounts and he'd collected all of his earnings on Boros before they'd made their way to Earth-that-Was, and Simon had been able to buy a beautifully furnished house for him and River. It was a house, but not a home. At least not yet. He didn't know the neighbours, it didn't have that warm feeling to it yet. He hoped that it came over time.

Looking up at the clock, Simon realized he needed to get to work. He found his briefcase on the sofa where he'd left it the day before and he grabbed his keys as he picked it up and shifted it to the opposite hand. Calling out to River to watch herself while he was out, Simon headed for the door, locking it securely behind him. He got to the car and made his way to the clinic. It wasn't like the hospital he remembered on Osiris, but it was something.

He reached the building soon enough and parked in the nearby lot, shutting the car door behind him and heading inside. His patients were one thing that brought him comfort. He could practice medicine anywhere in the world, in the universe, and it would always be like being home. He could leave the clinic at the end of the day feeling like he'd done something worthwhile, and that was part of being home.

Simon sighed softly as he made it to his office and set down his briefcase. He pulled on his labcoat, so unlike the uniform he was used to back home, and went to start on his patient list for the day. He had a feeling it was going to be a long one, especially if one of the other physicians chose to harp on him.

200 Word or Less Summary and Reason for Escaping to Canada (For our Character list)

Simon realized that being on the run from the Alliance wasn't something he wanted to do forever, living on a ship out in the black. It was then that Simon decided to take River and disembark the ship. They were left on what remained of Earth-That-Was in a place called Alternaville where Simon wanted to find work and lead some semblance of a normal life with River.
